In my previous post, I explored the Quranic pattern of knowledge leading to division—how new ideas disrupt societies, forcing people to either embrace change or resist it. But knowledge alone does not determine the fate of civilizations. What ultimately decides whether a society thrives or collapses is how it engages with knowledge, diversity, and justice.

A village is not just a place; it is a mindset. A society, a nation, or even a global superpower can become a village when it closes itself off to new knowledge, resists diversity, or enforces a singular way of thinking that leads to injustice. The Quran offers a profound insight into this reality, villages and nations that refuse to evolve or that embrace unjust ideologies are inevitably replaced.

When a Nation Becomes a Village: The Danger of Singular Thinking

The Quran frequently references ahlul-quraa (the people of villages), highlighting how their rigidity, injustice, and resistance to change led to their downfall.

📖 Quranic Reference:
“And how many a village did We destroy because it was unjust, and We brought forth after it another people.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:11)

The lesson here is clear:
Nations that embrace knowledge and diversity thrive.
Nations that cling to rigid, unjust ideas begin to decay.

Throughout history, some of the greatest civilizations collapsed because they adopted a singular worldview that led to injustice, stagnation, or isolation.

Historical Example: Nazi Germany – A Nation That Became a Village

Germany in the early 20th century was a world leader in science, philosophy, and culture. But under the Nazi regime, it adopted a rigid, oppressive ideology that:
Rejected diversity, promoting racial “purity”.
Suppressed free thought and dissent.
Turned against its own people, causing mass suffering.

By embracing a rigid and unjust singular ideology, Germany turned itself into a metaphorical village, isolated, intolerant, and ultimately self-destructive. The result? Collapse. By 1945, Germany was in ruins, its ideology defeated, its people suffering the consequences of following a worldview that rejected justice and diversity.

📖 Quranic Reflection:
“And when it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ they say, ‘Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our forefathers.’ Even though their forefathers knew nothing, nor were they guided?” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:104)

This verse describes what happens when a society refuses to question its own ideology, following it blindly even when it leads to destruction.

The Collapse of Empires: When Isolation Leads to Stagnation

While villages often resist diversity and new knowledge, cities have historically been hubs of exchange, progress, and intellectual growth. The Quran acknowledges this, emphasizing the importance of learning from different peoples and cultures.

📖 Quranic Reference:
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13)

But some great civilizations failed to heed this lesson. Instead of learning from others, they isolated themselves, resisted new ideas, and ultimately fell behind.

Historical Example: Qing Dynasty China – The Empire That Refused Change

For centuries, China was one of the most scientifically advanced civilizations. But during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), its leaders rejected modern technology and refused to engage with the changing world.

Refused Western innovations in science and industry.
Banned books and ideas that challenged Confucian traditions.
Limited trade and contact with outsiders.

By the time China realized its mistake, it had fallen behind European powers, losing humiliating wars and eventually collapsing in 1912.

📖 Quranic Reflection:
“And We never sent a prophet to a city except that We seized its people with hardship and adversity that they might humble themselves.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:94)

The Qing Dynasty’s downfall mirrored this divine patternhardship came as a consequence of resisting necessary change.

The Role of Rural Communities: Why We Cannot Abandon Villages

This is not a call to abandon rural life. Civilization cannot survive without agriculture, fresh produce, and natural resources. Cities thrive only because rural communities sustain them.

📖 Quranic Reference:
“Have you seen that which you sow? Is it you who cause it to grow, or are We the Grower?” (Surah Al-Waqi’ah 56:63-64)

The Real Crisis:

The real problem is not the disappearance of villages but rather:
The loss of agricultural knowledge as younger generations leave for cities.
The failure to invest in sustainable, innovative farming methods.
A growing detachment from the land that sustains civilization.

Historical Example: The Soviet Union – The Collapse of Forced Agriculture

The Soviet Union, in an attempt to enforce a singular economic vision, forced farmers into collective agriculture, ignoring local knowledge and sustainable practices.

Mass starvation occurred because of poor agricultural planning.
Millions died in famines due to rigid policies.
The economy collapsed under the weight of its own failed ideology.

By the time the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it had already crippled its agricultural sector, leaving millions in poverty.

📖 Quranic Reflection:
“Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you?” (Surah Al-An’am 6:6)

The Modern Evidence: The Rise and Fall of Societies

The world today is experiencing the exact shift the Quran describes:
Cities are growing as centers of human progress.
Villages (both literal and metaphorical) are emptying out or struggling to survive.
Nations that resist knowledge and diversity are falling behind.

📖 Quranic Reference:
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:11)

📌 Lesson:

  • Societies must evolve, but not at the expense of justice.
  • Nations must embrace diversity, but not forget their roots.
  • Civilization must move forward, but always with wisdom.

A Future Built on Balance

The Quran does not call for the destruction of villages—it calls for the destruction of rigidity, injustice, and intellectual stagnation.

📌 The lesson?
Embrace knowledge and diversity.
Invest in both urban and rural development.
Recognize that singular thinking leads to decay.

Because in the end, it is not about villages versus cities—it is about a world that moves forward together. 🌍
